A Lecture by Hilmar Kaiser: \”The Extermination of Armenians in the Diarbekir Region\”

WATERTOWN — The Armenian Museum of America presents a Lecture by Hilmar Kaiser titled “The Extermination of Armenians in the Diarbekir Region”. The event will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2015 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Adele & Haig Der Manuelian Galleries of the museum.

The lecture and slide presentation will introduce a new study on Diarbekir in 1915 and present substantial new findings from the Ottoman archives in Istanbul. For the first time, an order authorizing mass-murder of Armenians will be presented. Moreover, the research on Diarbekir has authenticated two documents from the post-war Ottoman courts martial which were believed to have been lost. New light will shed on the resistance against the genocide and the murder of Abidin Nesimi Bey who condemned the atrocities.

Hilmar Kaiser received his Ph. D. from the European University Institute, Florence, Italy. His research focuses on late Ottoman social and economic history. He has published numerous studies including “Genocide at the Twilight of the Ottoman Empire”, in, Donald Bloxham and A. Dirk Moses (eds.), The Oxford Handbook of Genocide Studies, Oxford University Press, Oxford, New York, NY, 2010; “Regional resistance to central government policies: Ahmed Djemal Pasha, the governors of Aleppo, and Armenian deportees in the spring and summer of 1915.”
