The motion had been submitted by the Compromis political party. Under the document, the city authorities officially acknowledge the killings of the 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

The motion reads in part, “2015 marks the Centenary of the Armenian Genocide which is considered the first genocide of the 20th century. Mass killings of Armenians took place in 1915-1921 by the Young Turk regime in the territory of the present-day Turkey, which resulted in the death of 1.5 million Armenians. About 2 million Armenians were forced to flee their homes, creating a large Armenian Diaspora.”

The bill will be submitted to the Mislata-based Armenian association Ararat, the foreign minister of Spain, the political groups represented in the Congress of Deputies (lower chamber of Spain’s parliament), and the Armenian Embassy to Spain and the NGOs based in Burjassot.
