S.D. Hunchakian “Sarkis Dkhrouni” Student and Youth Union Issues Statement on Plans for Bus Fare Hikes In Yerevan

YEREVAN — The S.D. Hunchakian “Sarkis Dkhrouni” Student and Youth Union issued a statement, calling for the Yerevan municipality to negate proposed bus fare increases in the capitol.

The statement Read: “Recently, a plan to reactivate an increase in transportation costs has been in the news. It is true that officials in the municipal administration have not indicated precisely when and by how much the increase in the city bus fares will be, but one thing is clear, any increase will affect the publics’ already difficult socio-economic situation and bring about new societal tensions.”

Based on the aforementioned statement, we the Hunchakian youth, believe that this issue should not be resolved for the benefit of several bus route owners, but rather for the ordinary citizens in the Republic of Armenia, for whom even a 50 AMD increase will have a serious impact on the personal finances of thousands of struggling families in Yerevan. Therefore, we urge the municipality to abandon any envisioned plans to increase bus fares. We are confident that a group of bus route owners will be able to solve ‘uncertainty of their daily bread’ without the bitter sweat-earned money of Armenia’s citizens.”
